Overcoming Injury: 3 Steps to Healing Faster

I never thought I would be writing my very first post sitting on a bag of ice, nursing a pulled hamstring.  Rather than bemoan the fact my entire running season was abruptly ended by an untimely meeting with a gnarly tree root, I decided to think like Allison Baver,  member of the U.S. Olympic speedskating team who earned a bronze medal in Vancouver.  Baver, who I interviewed while in town for a training camp at the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Marquette, made a remarkable recovery from a split right tibia and ankle impacted with shattered bone seven months prior to the Olympic trials.

Her Olympic spirit was evident in her eyes, and actions, and her message for healing was clear: 1) Think positive “It could always be worse” was her mantra.  2) Be flexible. Not able to walk, much less skate, Baver went out a bought a DVD on core training, and didn’t think about what she couldn’t do, instead she did the exercises that she could.  3) Eat “clean”, choose healthy foods.  Keep the focus on health, not necessarily weight.

No box of sympathy chocolates for me, I’m following Allison’s tips.  No running? The plus to this injury is I can now sit long enough to really be creative and get this blog off to a great start.  Once a week, you can expect updates on nutrition, get the scoop on how to lose weight, build muscle, and do more with less fatigue.  Whew! That’s a lot of promises, but hang on, it will be a great ride.

I agree! The benefit of doing SOMETHING, even if it does not come remotely close to your usual workout, is the chain reaction it creates in your mind. Doing ab work is a positive step, leading to positive thoughts which help to heal.
